In June 2010, Arena Church, in partnership with Arena Community charity no 1115569, launched its own foodbank as a result of an increasing awareness of the number of people within Ilkeston who had no food and were in need of emergency supplies. It started on the simple but effective premise whereby the people of the church brought groceries as often as they could and a team were then on hand to sort, pack and distribute. Since then, we have given out thousands of parcels to families and single people in Ilkeston and surrounding areas and this number is increasing in light of the financial climate we find ourselves in.
From 8th January 2013 our Foodbank Centre will be operating from our new Community Building on Belfield Street in Ilkeston.
We work with local organisations and agencies to set up a referral system where those in need can obtain a food parcel. Each parcel contains three days’ worth of nutritional food. We also provide a free, warm meal for clients on these days.
At present we receive support from local businesses, organisations, churches and schools, but we do need more donations as we continue to grow. These are the items we require for the food parcels:
- Tins – baked beans, potatoes, spaghetti, soup, rice pudding, tuna, fruit, meatballs, hotdog sausages, ham, corned beef
- Rice, pasta
- Pasta sauce
- Breakfast cereals
- Fruit juice – dilutable or longlife
- Dried or longlife milk, tea, coffee, sugar
- Biscuits, cereal bars, chocolate bars and crisps
- Toiletries – shower gel, soap, toilet rolls
- Tin openers
As our foodbank continues to grow, we are looking to set up a similar scheme in the Mansfield area. At present we are running a very small operation working alongside a women’s refuge but there is a great need in this town, so we are looking to grow this work.
